Mortals, sometimes known as “children of the gods” are the original inhabitants of the mortal planes and favoured creations of the lawful deities. Humans were the first mortals, as envisioned by the gods. Millennia of contact with magical entities has warped some groups of humans in various ways, resulting in non-human mortals including halflings and the cursed.
Every mortal possesses a soul, the manifestation of their essence and very life-force in a cosmic sense. When a mortal dies, their soul leaves their body before traveling to one of the afterlife planes, depending on how they perished. Souls of those who lead a moral life are taken by the angels to the heavenly domains, while those who led a life of unapologetic sin are claimed by the devils. Those who have no particular moral leaning are left roaming the worlds as spirits, where they wander for many years before eventually being reincarnated.
Though the majority of mortals tend to gravitate towards law, they have been granted complete free-will. This allows mortals to carve their own path in life, free to align themselves as they wish. Though mortals are the children of the gods, it is not uncommon to find them mingling with fae, elementals and even demons.
