Dragons are scaled creatures, typically of immense power and honed intelligence. The first dragons arrived from space, fleeing a great calamity that befell their original homeworld. When the dragons discovered Yggdrasil, they followed the many branches before settling throughout the planes. Dragons are technically aliens, though their numerous distinct subtypes have earned them their own classification.
All dragons are led by three divine beings. These entities are collectively known as The Draconic Court and are worshiped as deities by both dragons and mortals. The lawful gods took great offence when the dragons first settled in the mortal realms, ordering the expulsion of the creatures for the safety of their treasured mortals. Fearing the loss of another home, the draconic court met with the gods and established rules so that the two groups may coexist in relative peace.
To this day, dragons are not allowed to form political alliances with one another and cannot directly raise their young after hatching. Harsh, yet admittedly effective. By limiting the strength of dragons relative to mortals, the gods were able to balance the power of the two sides and ensure mutual safety. Some dragons recognized the full benefits of this deal, allying themselves with mortals and entrusting them with the care of their young. Others resented the deal, growing bitter and hateful with each passing day. These vengeful dragons resent mortals and cause needless destruction whenever possible in hopes of one day overthrowing the gods and securing draconic dominance.
