Divine Magic is wielded by Immortals. An individual who follows an Immortal or pantheon for long enough may eventually be granted a small amount divine essence for their piety, lifting them closer to Immortality and allowing them to perform miracles. As an individual grows stronger, they are usually granted more divine essence from the Immortal or pantheon they worship, who expect the follower to generally adhere to their tenants in return. Though divine essence can be granted, it cannot be revoked. For this reason, Immortals are often picky when it comes to who is blessed. A once pious individual who falls from grace will retain both their divine essence and their magic. Such individuals must find a new patron Immortal or pantheon if they wish to gain more divine essence.
There are two varieties of divine magic, standard and inverse. Where standard divine magic creates life, inverse divine magic destroys it. Any entity imbued with divine essence must chose one of these paths, light or darkness. An individual who is directly granted divine essence from an Immortal will often have this path determined for them. In rare circumstances, an entity may change the variety of divine magic they use. This typically correlates with a dramatic shift in personality, alignment, or a new divine patron.
The act of raising a new Immortal is exhausting, even to those with much experience. As such, divine magic is usually granted by lawful Immortals, who hope to create powerful champions in the war against chaos. Though chaotic Immortals can grant divine magic, most are selfish and only do so when it directly benefits them. Neutral Immortals take a more balanced approach, granting divine magic to a select few individuals who closely share their agenda and goals. Young Immortals are also unlikely to grant their followers divine essence, as most lack the knowledge and power to do so.
