Powerful beings known as Immortals rule over The Planes, their power is immense, though they are not true deities. Various religions have been created around the worship of these divine figures, though many are fundamentally opposed, welcoming the divine power of some Immortals and shunning that of others. Typically these groups revere a pantheon, though others simply worship a single Immortal.
Much like every other creature, Immortals are sorted into alignment groups, based on their position in the eternal struggle between law and chaos. Individuals typically follow an immortal who shares their alignment, though this is not always the case. Clerics, however, must always share an alignment with their Immortal master if they wish to obtain divine magic.
Though Immortals vary greatly in both power and prevalence, each of these entities must possess divine essence. A being that has no divine essence cannot be classified as an Immortal, even if they are worshipped as such. Some Immortals predate the realms, while others were created after creatures first walked the planes. Many Immortals started out as other beings, raised to their current status after obtaining divine essence.
