Preparation for Disaster

Date: October 30, 2022

Leaving the outpost, the group finds that it is now evening, the sun having almost completed its journey down towards the horizon. Bronwen and Donovan travel to the inn, hoping to enjoy a drink before they sleep. Breadstick, Otto and Nynx head off in separate directions with the intent of regrouping later on. When Bronwen and Donovan arrive at the inn, they soon find themselves seated at the bar. They each order a squash wine, though neither of them is sure exactly what to expect from the strange drink. The innkeeper tells the two of recent news, a dragon and a demon have fought openly in the nearby nation of Loneda. Bronwen is shocked by the news, though Donovan remains calm, stating that Loneda is far away. The barbarian and magic-user finish their drinks before booking rooms upstairs and heading to bed. Morning arrives and the two make their way downstairs, hoping to see their companions. Oddly enough, none of their fellow freelancers are present. The two eat their breakfast before heading outside. Bronwen sees a large chapel in the distance and urges Donovan to travel with her. Donovan politely declines, stating that the clergy would not like him very much. The two reach a reasonable compromise and decide to head to the nearby bastion instead.

Bronwen and Donovan watch the mighty fortification from afar, keeping note of each of its features. The two eventually decide to try their luck, crossing the stone bridge leading to the wooden drawbridge and mighty walls. They are stopped abruptly by a lone guard, crossbow at the ready. The guard tells the two to turn around, as the baron is not expecting visitors. The two speak with the guard and learn he is quite bored. Not wanting to keep him for too long, Bronwen and Donovan comply with his command, leaving the stone bridge and heading back into the village. Bronwen still wishes to go to the chapel and urges Donovan to come with her. After another brief debate, Donovan agrees that he will go to the chapel, though he will not set foot inside its doors. The two make their way down the muddy roads of Montmurr, before arriving at the chapel. Bronwen and Donovan get quite distracted when they begin to discuss exotic cuisine and do not notice Breadstick approaching them. The goblin appears, surprising the two and interrupting their bizarre discussion. Supposedly, Breadstick had left the village so he could sleep in the wilderness and is just now returning to town. Bronwen and Breadstick decide to enter through the large wooden doors, making their way into the chapel. When inside, the two find a monk and decide to ask him about the many stained glass windows that line the building’s walls. Bronwen walks off and begins to examine the windows more closely, meanwhile Breadstick engages in theological discussion with the monk. Breadstick takes little interest in the Golden Pantheon, the monk is saddened, though not surprised as fae creatures such as goblins do not follow the religion.

The group leaves at noon, travelling to a nearby blacksmith’s shop. The large cursed man they had rescued from the well stands in front of a forge toiling away to make a variety of metal goods. The man thanks the group for rescuing him, revealing his name to be Lou. Breadstick purchases a farming sickle from the wolf-man, feeling it would be good for combat decapitations. The group leaves the forge and travels to a nearby general store. Bronwen and Donovan merely browse the wares, while Breadstick decides to purchase eight days worth of rations. When the three leave the store, they are approached by a Red Blades mercenary, who tells them that they are needed urgently at the outpost. When the group arrives, they find Antoine sitting at a table with several of his men, discussing vital information obtained by scouts. A goblin army marches towards Montmurr, they will arrive by nightfall. The three frantically prepare themselves for the coming attack, fearing they may not have enough time.
